Leader in Providence St. Joseph Hospital Foundation community for three decades

Dr. Alejandro Ramirez is a key member of the Providence St. Joseph Hospital Foundation community, the type of leader who defines the character of an institution.

His passion for excellence and love for the hospital and our community are evident in his distinguished 32-year career as a staff anesthesiologist.

His roots here run deep — even through his family. He’s had one of his daughters and two grandchildren born at Providence St. Joseph, with two more grandchildren on the way. His wife, Vicky, volunteers on the Foundation’s Celebration event committee and as a translator at the hospital’s La Amistad Health Center.

As a Foundation board member, Dr. Ramirez is committed to ensuring the hospital has the necessary resources to deliver quality care, whether it’s state-of-the-art equipment or world-class physicians and staff. He’s also the Medical Director of both Surgical Services and the Pavilion Surgery Center.

Born in Cuba, Dr. Ramirez came to Los Angeles with his family as a child. His early interest in biology led him to medical school, where his desire to play a hands-on role in patient care drew him to anesthesiology.

He was attracted to Providence St. Joseph by the hospital’s reputation as a premier health care facility, and his work on the Board is motivated by his desire to sustain the high standards for which the hospital is known.

His background in biology informs his view of the connections between the hospital, its doctors and patients, and the Orange County community.

“Our community is our ecosystem,” Dr. Ramirez says. “I want our physicians to understand how important it is to support the hospital and the community, because it supports them and their patients.”

It’s a mission he believes resonates with everyone at Providence St. Joseph.

“People here don’t take the fact that we’re premier for granted. They continue to push the envelope.”

Reflecting on his ongoing impact on the hospital community, Dr. Ramirez emphasizes the collaborative environment he hopes will endure. “I’d like the culture that I’ve tried to promote at this institution to continue through others. That would be my legacy.”

That legacy seems secure. His leadership has fostered a culture of mutual respect while his work on the Board is helping to build a bright future, both for the hospital and the neighbors we serve. Still, he understands that excellence is a journey, not a destination.
