Jacqui’s Fund
Easing the cancer journey
Beloved wife and mother, Jacqueline “Jacqui” Powers, was the epitome of strength as she embraced every part of her journey in life with a smile — including her battle with breast cancer. When Jacqui passed at 37 years old, her husband, Pat, wanted to ensure future generations had what they needed while undergoing cancer treatment.
“We were very lucky to be in a position that provided Jacqui with anything she needed,” said Pat. “However, I heard stories of patients missing doctor’s appointments due to financial hardships. It didn’t feel right, and I knew I had an obligation to share my blessings with others.”
Pat’s compassion for the community motivated him to establish Jacqui’s Fund, which supports patients by funding items typically not covered by health insurance or other benefits. The cost of wheelchairs, caregiver expenses and wigs often prevent patients from following through with completing their cancer treatment.
“I can’t imagine what it is like for our caregivers to see someone who needed something, but there was no source of assistance. With this fund, they have the means to help.”
Today, Jacqui’s Fund has been integral in providing support for hundreds of cancer patients since 2006. Patients who have benefited from the fund send notes of gratitude to Providence St. Joseph Hospital, thanking them for making their cancer journey more comfortable and successful.
Reflecting on the impact the fund has made, Pat says, “I’m just grateful that we’ve been able to help people in whatever way possible. It’s a nice way to keep Jacqui within our hearts.”
