Mission in Motion
A powerful community partnership brings critical cardiac care to the front lines of emergency response
As first responders, police officers often arrive on the scene of a medical emergency even before paramedics. Now, thanks to a new initiative funded by Providence St. Joseph Hospital, officers with the Orange Police Department will be better equipped to save lives.
The idea began with longtime hospital supporters Geoff and Valerie Fearns, generous donors and passionate volunteers who care deeply about both public safety and the hospital’s mission. Geoff approached the Foundation with a compelling question: Could we help get automated external defibrillators (AEDs) into Orange Police patrol cars?
The answer was yes.
In celebration of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, the Orange Police Foundation announced the deployment of AEDs across half of the department’s patrol vehicles, made possible by a $50,000 contribution from Providence St. Joseph Hospital Foundation. The donation will fund the purchase, installation and maintenance of rugged, high-grade AEDs for approximately 25 marked patrol units.
To mark the occasion, the Foundation hosted a demonstration of the new AEDs, inviting emergency department caregivers, security officers, physicians and executive leaders to see the lifesaving technology in action.
“We’re proud to bring lifesaving tools into the field,” says Chief Philanthropy Officer Amy Daugherty. “When someone receives immediate care before reaching the hospital, their chances of survival and recovery increase dramatically. Supporting this initiative is an extension of our mission, not just within our walls, but wherever it’s needed most.”
