Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

First introduced to Orange County by Providence St. Joseph Hospital, Intraoperative Radiation Therapy provides a single dose of radiation immediately after lumpectomy procedures, reducing the need for weeks of daily radiation sessions. By upgrading this medical technology, we can continue offering this course of treatment, improving the quality of care for our cancer patients

Nurse Navigators

They work with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive services to their patients while reporting and monitoring things like treatment response and other types of progress. Within this specialty, nurse navigators schedule appointments, tests, procedures, and treatments to start and implement a care plan.

Interview with Dr. Stevie Otis

Born and raised in Orange County, Stavroula “Stevie” Otis, M.D., has deep ties to Providence St. Joseph Hospital. Her father, the late Peter T. Otis, M.D., was a revered hematologist at the hospital, and her mother, Peggy, remains a devoted supporter.

What It Means To Be Blessed

In January 2019, Sylvia sat with Dr. Maurice to discuss her stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis. “He must have spent two hours with me after my exam,” she marvels. “He empowered me with the information I needed to get through this.” Dr. Maurice also helped Sylvia improve her overall health to prepare her body for surgery.

The Power of Gratitude

Katherine, plagued by complications from years of smoking, sought the expertise of thoracic surgeon Dr. Maurice to identify a nodule in her lungs. Katherine’s case marked a milestone for Providence St. Joseph Hospital as she was one of the first patients to benefit from the philanthropically funded Ion system.

Keeping the Faith

At age 97, Bernie was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, which had spread throughout his body. During one of his first appointments, his oncologist Dr. Timothy Byun asked Bernie if he wanted to fight or let nature take its course. Bernie didn’t hesitate. “If there’s a chance, I want to fight this.”
